The Streets, Alleys & Sanitation Department is responsible for maintaining the city's roadways, alleyways, and waste collection services to ensure safe, clean, and efficient operations for residents and businesses.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Street & Alley Maintenance: The department maintains 64 miles of streets and 32 alleys within the city limits, ensuring they remain safe and accessible. Regular upkeep includes pothole and street cut patching, grading unpaved streets and alleys, and responding to right-of-way issues and citizen concerns.
• Snow & Ice Control: Plow and sanding crews work to keep streets navigable during winter storms, ensuring safe travel conditions.
• Street Sweeping & Debris Control: Two street sweepers are utilized as often as possible to maintain clean streets and prevent debris buildup.
• Stormwater Management: Maintaining and improving the city's stormwater infrastructure, including storm drains, catch basins, and drainage ditches, to prevent flooding and ensure proper water flow and compliance with environmental regulations.
• Traffic & Signage Maintenance: Installing, repairing, and maintaining street signs, pavement markings, and traffic control devices.
• Roadway Beautification & Safety: Painting curbs, trimming trees, and maintaining visibility at intersections.
• Contractor Supervision on Major Infrastructure Projects: Oversees contractors working on major road, sidewalk, and infrastructure improvement projects to ensure compliance with city standards and specifications.
• 50/50 Sidewalk Program: Administering the city's 50/50 Sidewalk Program, which provides cost-sharing opportunities for property owners to repair or replace sidewalks, improving pedestrian accessibility and safety.
• Emergency & Special Projects: Responding to weather-related emergencies, assisting with public works projects, and supporting city-wide initiatives. 
• Sanitation Services: Residential and commercial trash collection, dumpster maintenance, and coordination with waste disposal facilities. We operate two garbage trucks to provide reliable waste collection services for all residents within city limits. The Public Works Department maintains a scheduled pickup plan to ensure efficient service. If a scheduled pickup falls on a holiday, collection will be moved to the next business day.
